It felt like a never-ending election cycle, but the polls will officially close in less than two weeks. We’re a little more focused on voting than cooking this week. How are you all feeling?
This week we’re combining voting AND Halloween. With your help, we’ll create the Sunshine + Microbes Halloween Candy Power Ranking! Just click to comment below with your Top 5 favorite candies. We’ll use ranked choice voting (so sensible!) to determine the ultimate winner, and Jackie will create a recipe inspired by the top treat for next week’s very spooky Halloween issue. Matt’s a chocolate 🍫 guy (peanut M&Ms and Kit Kats). Jackie prefers sour 🍬 with her sweet (Sour Patch Kids forever!). But anything goes here (Except Candy Corn. Nobody likes Candy Corn).
Join in the fun and help inspire next week’s recipe by picking your favorite Halloween treats! And get out there and vote for real too! (Feel free to share your most cherished sweets and your heartwarming voting experiences! We love to hear it 🗳️)
The "get off my lawn" disclaimers. The new Butterfinger recipe sucks - became too soft, less crunchy, and doesn't stick to your dental work. Conversely, Starburst before the transfat ban were much better - the softer texture wins there. The best Gummy Bears are made by Albanese, which pairs great with a chilled Vinho Verde. The traditional Haribo are like chewing erasers. (In fact, they are actually pretty good erasers, in a pinch.) Link for non-olds: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Candy_cigarette. And you can't use RCV without mentioning Kanye. Just saying.
Whole lot of chocolate lovers here... I think we need to be mindful that there's a whole world of non-chocolate candy out there, just waiting to be discovered & loved by people. Without further adieu, here we go:
Jackie- I take exception to your exception (Except Candy Corn. Nobody likes Candy Corn). I too was once a naysayer someone treated me to candy corn mixed with salty peanuts. Ohhhhmyyy.... Delightful as well as seasonal.
1) Peanut butter cups (I prefer Justin's but will deign to eat a Reese's)
2) Panda licorice, black/raspberry
3) Payday
4) Heath bar
5) Baby Ruth
(And, if you really cannot see yourself eating candy corn, then just take off the white tips and stick them on your fingernails, for fun faux "long" nails!)
Also I plan to early vote this weekend in Florida, and after I do I will reward myself with an amazing slice of vegan cheesecake from a place down the block from the polls 😋
Also if you're early voting in person in Martin County come say hi to me at the Hoke Library on Monday! We can talk about candy voting because I won't be allowed to talk real voting :)
Jackie scoffed when I told her my top pick was peanut M&Ms. But with your support, we can make Jackie create a peanut M&M recipe next week. Get your family and friends to vote for what we all know is the best candy! Rock that sweet candy vote.
(Also thanks for voting in real life, which is just slightly more important)
